Only months back, I didn’t know how to speed up my laptop for free. The solutions were there but came with pricing. However, I stumbled upon a few tips and tricks from whose who of the PC world and I was luckily in the possession of knowledge as to how I do speed up my laptop and that too, for free. In the current blog post, I will be listing out those tips and tricks that will surely come handy to you also. So, read on and thank me later.
The main frustrating problem in any operating system is a lag issue or slow speed. There is a giant of Tricks available in the windows operating system. In this article, you will get to know 10+ pro tips and tricks to increase the speed of any windows laptop and computers.
So Let’s see- How to Speed up my Laptop for Free.
1. Stop Useless Programs Running in the Background
There are some programs that started running in the background after startup. Some programs you may want to run but others may useless or unnecessary. To close the unnecessary programs.
Right, Click on Taskbar> Select Task manager or press ctrl + shift + Esc to start Task Manager. In the Startup tab, you will see many programs that are running in the background with its impact. Now, you decide which one is necessary or unnecessary to startup automatically. This trick can help to increase the performance after disabling the high impact ones.
To disable, simply right click on the program and select disable.
Note: Some of the programs are necessary for windows to operate. If you are not sure about any running programs in the background then leave it.
2. Update system, apps, and drivers.
Updating system, apps, and drivers are good for security as well as performance. When you will get any update on your computer whether it is for windows or for apps or drivers up to date all. This will make your laptop or computer more smooth and faster. To check updates Go to your settings and click on Update and Security > windows update. Now click on Check for updates.
You can update drivers by third party software or you can go through the official website of the graphics card you are using. Recommended third party software: Driver booster, Winzip driver updater, and Driver checker.
3. Exit system Tray programs
System tray programs are similar to apps running in the background. After booting windows, some of the Programs stated automatically and reduces the performance of the system. To close these programs click the upward arrow which in the right side of Taskbar. You will see the programs in the tray which are running in Background. Choose which one you don’t want to run and exit it by pressing Right-click.
4. Adjust power Consumption
Windows comes with a feature of power plan which allows you to adjust the power consumption as well as performance. There are three types of power plans Balanced, Power saver, and High performance.
Balanced: It is a recommended option that is selected by default. This option helps to provide average performance with average power consumption. Basically, it balances performance and power consumption.
Power saver: This option is not good for your laptop because it reduces the performance to reduce power consumption as much as possible. It is helpful when the battery level is very low or you want to decrease the electricity bill.
High performance: By enabling this option your laptop performance becomes faster than previously. But remember one this option consumes more and more power to give a better result.
To Adjust power consumption – Click on the battery icon available in Taskbar or Go to control panel and hit hardware and sounds > Power options > Create a power plan.
Now, select any one option according to your need. For example: when you are playing games then select the third option that is High performance.
5. Delete the Unnecessary files
Unnecessary or unknown files may also be a cause of slow down your laptop. You should never store more than 75 to 80% of your Hard disk whether it is HDD or SDD. Always check if there are unnecessary files on your computer. Keep your recycle bin clean from useless files. There are many ways to check and clean the unnecessary files from the computer.

6. Uninstall Useless Softwares
Uninstall all the programs which you are not using for a long time. Useless software always uses your computer resources in the background and also harms it. Without decision never install any Unknown software from an unknown publisher. If any software is too big in size which your laptop can not handle then uninstall it and find the alternate of it.
To uninstall software open control panel> select programs> Programs and features.
Now, select ones that you want to uninstall.
7. Disk cleanup
There is a feature of disk cleanup available in windows which helps you to delete junk files, temporary files, etc. To run disk cleanup open Control Panel>System and Security>Administrative Tools.
Now, select the files which you want to delete.
8. Check Malware
The term Malware means a small piece of software that is specially designed to harm the computer system or to get unauthorized access. There are various types of malware e.g. viruses, Trojans, spyware, etc. It can be entered into your computer in different ways like unknown software downloads, Ads (advertisement), and even Gmail links. Malware can not only harm your computer it can also slow as well.
It can be prevented from antivirus. There are many antivirus companies available in the market some are paid and some are free. If you can pay the fee then we recommend Kaspersky, Bitdefender, McAfee, and Vipre.

9. Defragmentation of Hard disk
Defragment of a Hard disk drive is very necessary because overtime, files get scattered in your Hard disk. As it tries to find the files from multiple places so it makes your laptop slower. Disk defragmentation rearranged the fragmented data and makes your Hard disk speed. Remember one thing happens only in Traditional hard drive based on the mechanical arm(HDD). If you have Solid-state drive then skip this step. To defragment your Hard drive
Go to My Computer and right-click on the windows drive> click on properties> click the tools tab> under optimizing and defragment drive click on optimize.
10. Turn off Animations
Turn off the Animations(Visual effects) if windows are running slow. You can make your laptop fast by disabling some of the visual effects. Generally, it helps the applications to appear more smooth and results in overall better user experience but it can also slow down your laptop. To turn off visual effects
Go to the control panel> click on system and security> system> click advance system settings. In the performance section click settings.
Now, you can see a list of visual effects. Here, you can choose these effects one by one yourself or you can let windows to choose. Option third adjust for best performance is a better option because this option will turn off all the animations except some to provide better performance.
Increase Ram memory: If your computer has very low ram 2 or 3 Gb then, try to increase more than 4 Gb ram. Modern applications need more resources to run. Modern apps can’t run on your laptop if you have low ram. Increasing ram can help you in multitasking more efficiently.
Add an SDD drive: Only the Increasing of Ram is not enough to try to move on ssd drive if you have a traditional drive installed (HDD). SDD drive will help your computer to run smoothly. It is 6 times faster than an HDD drive.
Some Extra Tips
- Restart Regularly: Restart your laptop at least once in a week. After restarting a PC all the unknown programs and services will be stopped which was started by some programs. This tip can help you to make your system fresh.
- Run fewer programs at the same time: Running many programs simultaneously can cause a big impact on your computer. Close the applications instead of minimizing which you are not using. This tip can improve performance.
- Clean your computer physically: clean all the parts of your computer at least once a week. It will prevent overheating and increase performance
- Reinstall operating system: Installing new and fresh windows is a better choice when old windows become too slow.
These tips and tricks can improve your laptop’s performance because I also applied them on my laptop and I got a better result. If still, your windows laptop is slow after applying these tricks then reinstall windows.
