What is Cloud Storage and How Does it Work?- Its types, Architecture, Advantages and Disadvantages

Whenever you backup your important data it becomes very important to store it in a secure place to avoid data loss. And in this situation, Cloud storage can be the best solution.  Unfortunately, there are many businesses that are using outdated storage solutions e.g local servers in which the possibility of data loss is high. In this article, we are going to explain to you What is cloud storage and how does it work, its types, Architecture, Advantages, and Disadvantages.

Don’t miss: How to speed up a laptop or computer

Earlier, people used to store data in a floppy disk, after that CD, DVD, and Pendrive had increased, now cloud storage technology has come out which is very much liked by the people.

History of Cloud Storage

Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider invented cloud computing in 1960 when he was working on The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) which connects people from anywhere.

In 1983, CompuServe offered a bit of disk space to its consumer users in which they were allowed to store any type of files they want.  In 1994, AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph) an American multinational conglomerate holding company launched PersonaLink service, an online platform for both personal and business communication and entrepreneurship.  It was the first Web-based Storage.

In 2006, amazon web services launched a cloud storage service AWS S3. In 2009, Google launched its two application google docs and google sheets. And from here, the story of cloud storage began. People started to know what is cloud storage and how does it work.

What is Cloud Storage and how does it work?

In simple words, we can say that cloud storage is a digital storage solution in which, it utilizes multiple servers to store data. Here ‘Cloud’ means online, it means the technique online data storing is known as cloud storage.

In the Last few Years, it has grown a lot and it becomes so popular that it gives a direct challenge to local storage solutions. The reasons for its growth is the benefits provided by it:

Security: It means the data you stored or back up in cloud storage are stored in multiple servers, thereby reducing the possibility of data loss.

Accessibility: One of the best or main features of cloud storage is that you can access data from anywhere and anytime.

The architecture of Cloud Storage

It’s infrastructure is highly virtualized. In terms of multi-tenancy, near-instant elasticity and scalability, accessible interfaces, and metered resources, it’s like cloud computing. It can be utilized from an off-premises service.

Object storage software like Openstack Swift. Object storage services like Microsoft, Azure Storage,  Oracle Cloud Storage, and Amazon S3.Object storage systems like, EMC ECS, and EMC Atmos are all examples of storage. These can be hosted and deployed with cloud-storage characteristics.

Types of Cloud Storage

1.Personal Cloud Storage: It is also called as mobile cloud storage. In this type of cloud storage, an individual’s data is store in the cloud and gives him access. It also provides data sharing and data syncing features across multiple devices e.g iCloud.

2. Public Cloud Storage: This type of cloud storage is basically for enterprises. The service provider manages the hardware which helps the enterprises from extra costs. It can be organized faster than on-premises data storage because it is more accessible. It stores static and live data.

  • Expert monitoring
  • Highly reliable
  • Cost-effectiveness

3.Private Cloud Storage: This type of cloud storage is used by a single organization. The stored data is only accessible by the corporation. To avoid potential performance and security issues Government agencies, healthcare institutions, and financial organizations often use private cloud storage. Maintainance costs are higher than Public cloud storage.

  • Highly scalable
  • Rapid deployment
  • Reliability
  • Customizable

4.Hybrid Cloud Storage: It’s a combination of both public and private cloud storage. It merges the benefits provided by both cloud storage. Enterprises can do some tasks like Webmail in public cloud storage but to keep their data safe they use private cloud storage. Organizations can separate rarely accessed data from regularly accessed data through Hybrid cloud storage.

  • Customization
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Security

Advantages of Cloud Storage:

  • File Accessibility- It means the data stored in cloud storage can be accessed from anywhere and anytime whenever you have an internet connection.
  • Offsite Backup- To reduce costs cloud storage provides offsite backup to organizations.
  • Security of Data- Cloud Storage helps data from ransomware and malware. It also helps from data loss.

Disadvantages of Cloud Storage:

  • Internet speed – A good and stable internet connection is needed to access or share data from cloud storage.
  • High Cost for huge data-  Organizations that store terabytes of data in the cloud storage have to pay high service costs.
  • Minimum control over data storage framework- The customers have minimal control because the entire data storage framework is managed by the service provider.

Some Cloud Storage Service Providers:

1. Free Cloud Storage:

  • Google Drive
  • Onedrive
  • Drop-box

2. Businesses cloud storage:

  • Spider Oak
  • Tresorit
  • Egnyte
